2017 Stock Market Year in Review (and Charts!)

Another year in the books! Here are some of the highlights:

S&P 500 Index Performance in 2017

U.S. stocks outperformed much of the developed world in 2017. I believe it is the 15th best year  in the index’s history when including dividends.

S&P 500 performance (Including Dividends Re-Invested)- 21.83%

Range of the S&P 500 during the year: Low: 2,245.13, High: 2,694.97

NRG (Ticker: NRG) – Up 132.30%

Align (Ticker: ALGN) – Up 131.13%

Vertex Pharma (Ticker: VRTX) – Up 13.42%

Wynn Resorts (Ticker: WYNN) – Up 94.88%

Boeing (Ticker: BA) – Up 89.41%

 

Worst 5 performers in the S&P 500 for 2017:

Range Resources (Ticker: RRC) – Down 50.35%

Under Armour (Ticker: UAA) – Down 50.33%

Scana (Ticker: SCG) – Down 45.72%

Envision Healthcare (Ticker: EVHC) – Down 45.39%

General Electric (Ticker: GE) – Down 44.78%

 

Dow Jones Industrial Average Index Performance in 2017

Large cap stocks performed better in 2017 compared to mid and small caps. The blue chip Dow stocks beat the S&P 500 by nearly 7%!

Dow Jones Industrial Average (Including Dividends Re-Invested) – 28.11%

Range of the Dow Jones Industrial Average during the year: Low: 19,677.94, High: 24,876.07

Top 5 best performing Dow companies for 2017:

Boeing (Ticker: BA) – Up 89.43%

Caterpillar (Ticker: CAT) – Up 69.92%

Visa (Ticker: V) – Up 46.14%

Apple (Ticker: AAPL) – Up 46.11%

Walmart (Ticker: WMT) – Up 42.87%

 

Worst 5 performing stocks in the Dow for 2017:

General Electric (Ticker: GE) – Down 44.78%

IBM (Ticker: IBM) – Down 7.57%

Exxon Mobil (Ticker: XOM) – Down 7.33%

Merck (Ticker: MRK) – Down 4.42%

Verizon (Ticker: VZ) – Down 0.84%

These were also the only 5 Dow components to have negative returns for the year.

 

 

 

 

 

NASDAQ Composite Index Performance in 2017

Tech was another big story in 2017. the “FAANG stocks” of Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google dominated headlines for much of the year and propelled the tech-heavy NASDAQ to record highs.

Worst 5 performers in the NASDAQ in 2017:

Dish Network (Ticker: DISH) – Down 17.57%

O’Reily Autoparts (Ticker: ORLY) – Down 13.60%

Ulta Beauty (Ticker: ULTA) – Down 12.27%

Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) – Down 12.25%

Kraft Heinz (Ticker: KHC) – Down 10.95%


10 Year U.S. Treasury Interest Rate in 2017

10 Year Treasury Interest Rates finished the year almost exactly where they began, but had a very big run-up from the September lows. Will the trend continue in 2018?

Volatility in 2017

Record low volatility was one of the big stories of 2017. We saw the lowest VIX reading ever in December, and the longest period the VIX has been below 10 in history

Emerging Markets Performance 2017 (MSCI Emerging Markets Index)

Emerging Market performance was one of the stars this year, putting up amazing returns after years of relatively poor performance.
